How to cover grey brows
and thicken sparse areas
With or without makeup, eyebrows are the building blocks to your face and have the ability to completely lift and change a face shape. So whether you wear makeup or not #itsthebrows that are key in any beauty routine to give you the confidence to take on any day ahead.
As we age, our brows change due to a range of factors, such as thinning eyebrow hair. Updating your eyebrow routine in line with this and keeping up with trends can be confusing. This can be especially tricky for people with blonde eyebrows too as they turn grey.
We sat down with Caroline, in a Conversation series interview to hear about her experience of leading a busy lifestyle and her ever evolving brows over the years.
Caroline is a busy working woman and mum of three grown up children. She shares her challenges over the years of not taking the time to do her beauty routine, due to being too busy balancing her work and family. She has recently changed this and learnt to enjoy the process of doing her makeup and how this has significantly impacted her confidence.
What causes brows to turn grey?
Eyebrows turn grey as we age because of a decrease in melanin, the pigment that gives hair its colour. This process is similar to what happens to the hair on our head, but there are some differences. Genetics can also play a role in this. When grey or white eyebrows will appear is largely determined by genetics, and there's no way to predict it. Some people may start to see grey hairs in their twenties or thirties, while others may not see them until their forties or fifties.
WHY DO BROWS BECOME THINNER?
Eyebrows can also become thinner and more sparse as we age due to a natural decline in estrogen which affects hair growth cycles and hair follicle structure. Other reasons could include:
OVER PLUCKING
Certain brow trends encourage us to over pluck the brows, which can be fun to try when you are young. But when you get to a certain age, this can inhibit hair growth. A lot of us can empathise with this due to the trends of the nineties and noughties. So it’s something to think about the next time this trend comes into fashion.
AGEING
As we get older, the density of our hair gets weaker. The hair follicles aren’t regenerating as well so our hair becomes thinner and more brittle, and can sometimes fall out completely.
HORMONAL CHANGES
Inevitable hormonal changes and imbalances can affect the strength and thickness of eyebrow hairs. Sometimes some thyroid diseases can affect hair production in the body too due to hormone imbalance.
STRESS
Stress affects us all in many ways, extreme levels of stress can sometimes cause the hair on the body (including eyebrows) to fall out and in some cases this may inhibit hair regrowth. Common stresses include diseases, recovering from an illness, major life stresses including job loss, divorce etc.
SKIN CONDITIONS
There are also a few common skin conditions that can cause eyebrows to thin such as Eczema, Dermatitis and Psoriasis. Each of these conditions affect the skin, which can result in itchy, flaking skin that can stop healthy hair growth in that affected area such as the eyebrows.
